Who is a Cancer Survivor? The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship defines a Cancer Survivor as “any person diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis and the balance of life”. In the United States as of 2009, there are more than 10 Million cancer survivors who are dealing with the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal changes as result of their cancer treatment.

What is Cancer Survivorship? The focus of Cancer Survivorship is to restore health, wellness, and improve overall function and the quality of life for every Cancer Survivor. These goals are achieved through Oncology Rehabilitation intervention that utilizes manual physical therapy techniques to improve motion, mobility and function, as well as improve aerobic conditioning, resistive training, and balance and coordination training.

What is Oncology Rehabilitation?Oncology Rehabilitation is a subspecialty within the field of physical therapy focused on addressing the many side effects that result from cancer treatment interventions such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Side effects such as Lymphedema and the typical physiological deficits including fatigue, general weakness, shortness of breath, poor endurance, nausea, movement and soft tissue restrictions, as well as balance and coordination disturbances all result from cancer treatment intervention.

As clinical experts in this subspecialty, we have obtained advanced post-graduate academic and clinical training in the fields of Oncology, Lymphedema, Manual Therapy and Exercise Physiology. In addition, we have a more thorough understanding of Cancer and its epidiemiology in order to correctly identify the types and staging of cancers, as well as the most common diagnostic and surgical procedures performed. As clinical experts, we will be able to identify the negative physiological effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy interventions.

Why Would I Benefit From Oncology Rehabilitation?Cancer Survivors experience many side effects that negatively impact their personal lives while undergoing treatment. Once they have completed their cancer treatment, they often face the challenging task of rebuilding their personal lives without much direction or advice from their oncology physician or their personal primary physician.

This is a huge black hole for many cancer survivors, and it is very frustrating to them! At New Horizons Physical Therapy, we understand that all Cancer Survivors have a primary goal of returning to their pre-cancer life, which includes various hobbies, personal interests and physical activity levels. Their secondary goal is to leave cancer and the associated cancer treatment behind, forever! New Horizons Physical Therapy recognizes that Cancer Survivors have an ongoing need for medical intervention and proactive care well after they complete traditional treatment. As experts in Oncology Rehabilitation, we can effectively reduce the impact of these common side effects and positively influence lifestyle recovery.

Can Any Physical Therapist Provide Oncology Rehabilitation? As with all medical specialties, Oncology Rehabilitation requires advanced education and specific training in Oncology, Lymphedema, Manual Therapy and Exercise Physiology. Not all Physical Therapists undergo this level of training, and therefore, not all therapists are appropriately prepared to provide the level of care that is required for Lymphedema and Cancer Rehabilitation clients. Cancer survivors have very specific rehabilitation needs, and it is beneficial for you to identify a licensed Physical Therapist who has obtained specialization in this field.
