Examples of LymphedemaStage I - Reversible Lymphedema
Stage I Lymphedema is referred to as "Reversible Lymphedema". Presentation includes very soft, pitting edema without fibrosis of the tissue. Prolonged elevation of the involved limb leads to complete resolution of the clinically evident swelling.

Stage I - Reversible Lymphedema

Stage II - Spontaneously Irreversible Lymphedema
Stage II Lymphedema is referred to as "Spontaneously Irreversible Lymphedema". Presentation includes soft tissue fibrosis that decreases tissue suppleness and reduces the ability of the skin to indent (pit) with pressure. Skin infections (Cellulitis) are more common to this stage because of the diminished ability of the immune system to respond to foreign bacteria and debris.

Stage II - Spontaneously Irreversible Lymphedema

Stage III - Lymphostatic Elephantiasis
Stage III Lymphedema is referred to as "Lymphostatic Elephantiasis". This stage is associated with severe edema and fibrotic response of the tissue, as well as other skin changes such as papillomas, cysts, fistules and hyperkeratosis. Recurrent bacterial and fungal infections of the skin and nails are most common to this stage.
