Benefits of ExerciseIn order to develop an individualized, prescriptive exercise program for a Functional Restorative Lab participant, a number of physical assessments and testing measurements must be performed. This fitness assessment and musculoskeletal evaluation is standardized for all participants, with all results being compared to normative data for normal, healthy individuals of the same age range and gender.

The benefit of comparing your fitness assessment results to normative data of healthy individuals allows you to appreciate where you are in terms of those standardized tests and measures. This reveals your overall level of fitness, and provides a baseline from which improvement can be made. In addition, it also provides a starting point for your exercise program, where future progress and enhancement of your health and fitness level can be measured.

Our thorough assessment process includes identifying your:

  • Medical history, including orthopedic and musculoskeletal issues that may impact exercise participation
  • Cancer history, including type and stage of cancer, prior treatment received, current treatment intervention, as well as any future planned treatment interventions
  • Body composition, including height, weight, body fat percent, and Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Vital signs such as resting heart rate, respiration rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and oxygen saturation
  • Joint range of motion and overall flexibility of the spine and extremities
  • Cardiovascular fitness and endurance utilizing a standardized treadmill testing protocol and heart rate monitor
  • Pulmonary function utilizing computerized spirometry
  • Muscle strength and endurance testing utilizing an electronic force dynamometer
  • Functional strength testing for the trunk and extremities
  • Balance and coordination, including proprioception and kinesthetic awareness

In addition, we utilize standardized surveys for the assessment of fatigue, depression, and loss of physical function and perceived disability. These tests allow us to rate your fatigue as well as quantify the level of disability you are experiencing as a result of cancer or cancer treatment.
